The option to make desktop icons transparent is a Windows feature which means that every user can set it in Windows directly without having to install third party software. It was there, somewhere that was sure but it is sometimes hard to remember if the setting was a standard Windows feature or available through so called Windows tweaking tools. I was almost certain that this was a setting in Windows itself. I decided to search for a solution for the issue to find out how to make desktop icons on the system transparent so that they would show up fine regardless of the background image. They showed up in black which did not work properly with the selected white background image that was displayed on the system.

Yesterday's switch to the Royale theme for Windows XP had the negative side effect that the text of icons on the computer's desktop were not transparent anymore.

Activating that option will make desktop icons transparent. The Visual Effects menu contains the entry Use Drop Shadows For Icon Labels On The Desktop. A click on the Advanced tab and Performance loads the menu where the parameter can be changed. When done, you should have an UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency value set to 1 as shown in the image below.Switching themes in Windows can have a few side effects that only become apparent after working with the system for some time. It can be found in Control Panel > System.Double-click on UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency and set the value to 1 and then press the OK button. Type UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency and press Enter on the keyboard. You will be prompted to enter the name of the new value.which in Windows refers to transparent, glasslike window borders and. Right-click on Search and select New and then DWORD (32-bit) Value as shown below. Ifyou want Windows to arrange desktop icons automatically, right-click the desktop.Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced key.Windows will display a UAC prompt asking if you wish to allow the Registry Editor to make changes to the system. To do that, press the Windows key + the R key at the same time to open the Run: dialog and then type Regedit and press the OK button. As you cannot launch programs via Windows Search, we need to launch the Registry Editor via the Run: dialog. This can be done via the Registry Editor using the following steps below: "UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency"=dword:00000001
